WHY SHOULD I TAKE OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS FOR MY SKIN?

In addition, to the many health advantages, Omega-3 fatty acids benefit your hair and skin, due to their potent anti-inflammatory ability and the role they play in maintaining cell membranes. They are part of the skin’s fat/lipid content, and thus maintain the integrity of the skin cells, keeping skin smooth and moisture in.

As such, omega-3 fatty acids assist with reducing wrinkles (reducing the appearance of fine lines) and keeping the skin hydrated.  In a study conducted on women who took omega-3 oils for 12 weeks, skin hydration increased by nearly 40 percent.

Additionally, omega-3 fatty acids protect skin cells against sun-induced inflammation, reduce acne and eczema, and protect against dry, red, and itchy skin. Several studies have shown that unprotected skin doesn’t burn as quickly in people who take omega-3 fatty acid supplements.

Moreover, research has linked long-term use of an omega-3 rich diet with fewer sun-induced skin lesions, which can turn into skin cancer, especially in older persons with sun damaged skin. Furthermore, omega-3 fatty acids may boost hair growth and reduce hair loss.

If you want a radiant, healthy skin, the best place to start is by taking a skin and hair supplement with omega-3-fatty acids, as these will also benefit your overall health.

WHAT ARE OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS

They are known as essential fatty acids because your body can’t make them,  therefore they must be obtained through foods or supplements. Omega-3 fatty acids are a type of polyunsaturated fat (‘unsaturated’ means the molecule has many double bonds).

There are numerous types of omega-3 fatty acids, of which ALA (alpha-linoleic acid), EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are the most common. ALA is an 18-carbon fatty acid, which appears to benefit the the immune and nervous systems. EPA is a 20-carbon fatty acid that produces eicosanoids, chemicals that help reduce inflammation. DHA is a 22-carbon fatty acid that contributes to brain development and function.

Omega-3 fatty acids form part of the structure of the cell membrane and are thus essential for cellular maintenance and functioning. They also have significant health benefits such asimproving heart health (possibly helping manage cholesterol and blood pressure levels), supporting mental health (helping manage depression), decreasing liver fat, and fighting inflammation (could thus be of benefit in chronic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, etc).
